The church of “Santa Croce”, home of the Civic Museum of Umbertide.
The Umbertide Museum of “Santa Croce”, inaugurated in 1998, is located in Piazza San Francesco. It is flanked on the right side by the church of “San Francesco” – from which the square is named – church of Gothic structure and a XIVth century portal.
Further on, once surpassed the cloister of the latter, there is the church of “San Bernardino”, built in the first half of the fifteenth century as an oratory.
The three churches and the convent are still today a unique building block, with elegant and different architectural typologies, overlooking the eastern side of the square. The civic museum is located inside the church of “Santa Croce”, an ancient oratory of the homonymous confraternity; the structure, restructured several times over the centuries, as you can see it now, dates back to the XVIIIth century and inside it are preserved artworks dated from the XIIIth to the XVIth century.
Among them, the altarpiece representing the "Deposizione" painted by Luca Signorelli on commission of the Confraternity of “Santa Croce” between 1516 and 1517 is without doubt the most valuable one; of great importance, however, are a sixteenth-century multi-material sculpture depicting San Rocco, a canvas by Pomarancio representing the "Madonna col Bambino in Gloria" and an organ (a Morettini) dating back to the XIVth century, recently restored and used to perform concerts. Among the most interesting events taking place in the Museum, there are the Spring Festival, a prestigious concert series, and the XIXth Century Revival, historical costume event which is held every year in September.
