Città di Castello and the Municipal Art Gallery

The guided tour starts in the historic center of Città di Castello, in Roman ancient times called “Tifernum Tiberinum”. We visit the Cathedral of the patron saint of the town, Saints Florido and Amantius, that overlooks Piazza Gabriotti. We can also admire the Civic Tower, the Bishop’s Palace and the Town Hall. The tour continues towards Piazza Raffaello Sanzio with the entrance to the Franciscan Church of Saint Francis. Here, as a young artist, the Italian Renaissance painter Raphael was commissioned by town patron Albizzini family to paint “The Marriage of the Virgin” (also known as “Lo Sposalizio”). Today, this particular piece is displayed in the Brera Art Gallery. We then proceed towards Palazzo Vitelli in Sant'Egidio and from there towards Piazza Matteotti, the heart of the city. Walking down the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, after a brief stop at the Church of Saint Dominic, we reach Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera, which houses the Municipal Art Gallery. The building is a beautiful example of Renaissance style; the main façade is decorated with graphic scenes painted by Cristoforo Gherardi to Giorgio Vasari’s drawings. The twenty-five palace rooms are also richly decorated with frescoes from the early 16th century; they host the art collection exhibiting works from the 13th to the 20th centuries, with valuable masterpieces by Raphael, Luca Signorelli, Ghiberti, Ghirlandaio, Della Robbia, De Chirico, Mafai, Guttuso and many other artists.
